The Art of Emceeing with Authenticity

Sharing my insights on being a fun and authentic event presenter, emcee and event host.

One of the questions I get asked a lot as an emcee, presenter, and moderator

“How do you find the right balance between being yourself and being professional?”

And to me, I think the answer is easier than we sometimes make it.

If you feel like you have to put on a giant mask to “perform professionalism,” maybe you’re in the wrong role.

Being a great event host isn’t about becoming a totally different, polished, and professional person. It’s about confidence, relatability and your skill in keeping the energy right, putting speakers and audiences at ease and TIME KEEPING (never forget the importance of time keeping!)

Gone are the days when the perfect presenter was someone hyper-polished, TV-smile-perfect, and just a little bit intimidating.

Event audiences want someone they can relate to. Someone who feels approachable, who can make them laugh, and who seems genuinely happy to be there.

As an emcee, your job is to guide people through the event, help them feel comfortable, and keep them engaged. You can’t do that if you sound like a robot or if you’re worrying about being “too corporate” to let your personality through.

Here’s how I approach it:

🎤 Dial up, don’t mask
When I step on stage, I’m still me, just with a little extra energy. I’m not pretending to be someone I’m not, I’m simply turning the volume up on the parts of me that make people feel welcomed and engaged.

🎤 Keep it human

If something goes wrong, I acknowledge it with humour. If someone makes a great point on stage, I react to it. Those little human moments are what make events feel memorable and help you connect with everyone in the room.

🎤 Remember why you’re there

The audience isn’t judging your word-perfect script, they just want to feel looked after and even mildly entertained while they learn something new.

Being authentic isn’t just nice for you, it’s good for the event. When you, as the event host, are relaxed and confident, the audience relaxes too. They ask more questions, they network more easily, and they leave with a much better experience.

And that’s the point of having a professional emcee or moderator in the first place, to make the event feel smooth, engaging, and (dare I say it?) a little bit FUN!

So if you’re looking for an event host who strikes the balance between professional and approachable, corporate and human, serious and hilariously savage (when appropriate), and who will keep your audience engaged without sounding like they swallowed the autocue, you know where to find me.
